Is ChatGPT Plus worth it?

Now that ChatGPT Plus is rolling out to other countries besides the US, people are asking whether it’s worth the extra $20/month. While in many cases the answer is yes, let’s look at the features and break down what you’re getting.

Speed

The regular version of ChatGPT is already quite fast, with response times of a few seconds or less, but ChatGPT Plus promises to be even faster, with speeds of around three times the regular version, or about as fast as most people can read.

The faster response times mean that users can get answers to their questions more quickly, without having to wait for the model to process the input. This can be especially useful in situations where time is of the essence, such as customer service interactions or technical support. The faster response times also make it easier for users to have conversations with the model, as they can receive answers more quickly and keep the conversation flowing.

While the speed of basic ChatGPT is still quite fast, I have found myself occasionally waiting for it to generate text. Especially when it’s rewriting things or adding items to a list. This can get a bit annoying, so I have no problems paying $20/month for quicker speed. This is a 5/5-star feature.

Accuracy

Another benefit of ChatGPT Plus is its accuracy. The model has been trained on even more data than the regular version, which means that it has a better understanding of language and can generate more accurate responses to user input. This can be especially useful for applications where accuracy is critical, such as in medical or financial contexts. The improved accuracy of ChatGPT Plus also means that it is less likely to generate responses that are off-topic or irrelevant to the user's query.

Unless you’re asking ChatGPT some really weird stuff, it’s generally pretty accurate. I don’t often run into accuracy issues so this feature is probably 3.5/5 stars. I’m assuming it’s more accurate because that’s what OpenAI says, but haven’t really seen much of a difference.

Experimental features and GPT-4

In addition to its speed and accuracy, ChatGPT Plus also gives you access to GPT-4. GPT-4 is much better that 3.5. I’ve run a multitude of experiments and GPT-4 is better at everything except speed. GPT-4 is slow, but the answer are better and more accurate. Especially for coding. When I was getting it to make this Name Five game, 3.5 couldn’t do it at all. I had to fix a lot of the code. GPT-4 did it in a single try.

I like speed so for me GPT-4 is a 7/5-star feature. Since the OpenAI guys seem pretty smart, I’m assuming they will add more beta features in the future. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.

No downtime during heavy use

ChatGPT Plus is that it is not limited by demand, meaning that you can use it even when usage is high. Unlike some other AI tools that may slow down or become unavailable during periods of high demand, ChatGPT Plus is designed to handle large volumes of traffic and provide consistent, fast responses. This means that you can use the model even during periods of high demand, without having to worry about slowdowns or downtime.

This feature is huge for me since I feel like a caveman when ChatGPT is at capacity, and I have use primitive tools like search engines or a keyboard. If I was a student and I set aside some time to study or work on an essay and ChatGPT was down, it would be annoying. Compared to the cost of a university education, $20/month is peanuts. I wouldn’t be surprised if schools started offering ChatGPT Plus subscriptions in their tuition packages. Obviously, the professors need to get past the whole “ChatGPT is cheating!” thing, and that might take a bit. But the cat is out of the garbage can now. It’s not going back in.

I hate logging in to ChatGPT only to find it’s down, so this is a 6/5-star feature for me. Imagine opening your calculator and being asked to wait an hour. Like, no. I’m not doing math on paper. That’s your job.

Cost

The only potential drawback of ChatGPT Plus is its cost. The model is infinitely more expensive than the regular version, which may make it less accessible to some users. $20 is not a lot for me, but it could be for a broke student. Or someone living in a third-world country. If you use ChatGPT on a daily basis, then the $20 is probably worth it.

I think they’ve chosen a good price point here. Last year I experimented with a program called Jarvis (since renamed Jasper) which was trained on GPT-3. It was good, but not great. Not anywhere close to ChatGPT and you had limited outputs. Each word cost a token and you only got so many tokens per month. It felt bad when you spent money to generate text you didn’t like, which isn’t a problem with ChatGPT. They wanted something like $120/month for Jarvis, and I almost paid it. It was novel, fun, and it increased productivity. So that should tell you what I think of $20/month ChatGPT Plus.

Are you using it for work?

For those who are using ChatGPT for work purposes, the investment in ChatGPT Plus may be well worth it. Increased productivity is one of the biggest benefits of the new model, and this can have a significant impact on the bottom line. With faster response times and improved accuracy, users can get answers to their questions more quickly and accurately, which can help them make better decisions and complete tasks more efficiently. This can lead to increased productivity and a more streamlined workflow, saving time and resources for the organization.

The cost of ChatGPT Plus, at $20 per month, is relatively small compared to the value it can bring to the organization. This is especially true when you consider the cost savings from increased productivity and the time saved from not having to wait for responses from the model. Additionally, the improved accuracy of the model can help to reduce the risk of errors and improve the overall quality of work, further adding to its value.

The answer for me is yes, ChatGPT Plus is definitely worth it

ChatGPT Plus is a powerful tool that offers significant benefits over the regular version of ChatGPT. Its faster response times and improved accuracy make it well-suited for a variety of use cases, such as customer service, technical support, and data analysis. For all the things you can pay $20/month for in life, ChatGPT Plus is one of the best. Thanks for reading and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter.
